No Heat, and What Usually Causes It
Most no heat calls come down to a short list.
- Thermostat. Wrong mode, dead batteries or a failed unit. Check this first, because it costs nothing.
- Dirty filter. Restricted airflow overheats the furnace and trips the limit switch, which shuts it down to protect itself. A filter is the cheapest fix in heating.
- Igniter or flame sensor. The furnace tries to fire, fails and locks out. Both are common wear parts and both are a same visit repair.
- Blower motor or capacitor. The burner lights but no air moves, or the unit hums and does nothing.
- Gas supply or safety lockout. A closed valve, a pressure fault or a safety device doing its job. This one is not a homeowner repair.
Repair or Replace
Age and repair cost settle it. Under 10 years with one failed part, repair is almost always right. Past 15 years, a repair worth a large share of a new system rarely makes sense, particularly when the old unit is inefficient and the gas bill shows it. A cracked heat exchanger is the exception at any age, because that is a carbon monoxide risk. On a newer unit the exchanger itself may be replaceable, often under manufacturer warranty. On an older one, replacement of the furnace is usually the answer. Either way the furnace is shut down until it is dealt with, and every Ontario home with fuel burning appliances is required to have a working carbon monoxide alarm.
