What a Tune Up Includes

• Filter inspection and replacement, because restricted airflow is behind a surprising share of breakdowns
• Burner and heat exchanger check, which is a safety inspection as much as a performance one
• Refrigerant level check on cooling equipment and heat pumps
• Coil cleaning and airflow assessment, so the system is not fighting itself
• Thermostat calibration, so the temperature you set is the temperature you get
• Condensate drain clearing, which prevents the water damage a blocked drain causes
• Electrical connections and safety controls, including carbon monoxide checks on gas equipment

When to Book

Service the furnace in early fall and the air conditioner in spring, each ahead of the season that will load it. Heat pumps are the exception and want servicing twice a year, because they run in both seasons rather than one. Booking in the shoulder months also means you get a choice of appointment rather than whatever is left during the first cold snap, when every HVAC company in Toronto is at capacity.

Why It Pays

Three reasons, and the last one is the one you feel monthly.

• Warranty. Manufacturer warranties generally expect the equipment to be properly maintained. Check your own paperwork, because terms vary by brand, and keep the service records either way.
• Breakdowns. A worn igniter or a weak capacitor gives warning signs a technician can read at a tune up. Left unchecked, the same parts are what fail on the coldest night of the year.
• Running cost. A dirty coil, a low charge or an uncalibrated thermostat makes the system work harder for the same comfort, and that shows up monthly on the bill.

What It Does Not Do

A tune up is not a repair, and it is not a guarantee against failure. A component can fail between visits, and an aging system reaches the end of its life whatever is done to it. What annual servicing does is shift the odds, catch the faults that give warning, and keep the paperwork in order for a warranty claim. It is the difference between a scheduled part swap in October and a cold house in January waiting on the first appointment we can get to you.
